Coroner tracking spike in overdose deaths for Columbus area

COLUMBUS >> The coroner serving the greater Columbus area says overdose deaths blamed largely on opioids are spiking compared to a year ago.

Franklin County Coroner Dr. Anahi Ortiz said Tuesday the county in central Ohio saw 173 overdose deaths through April of this year.

That's a 66 percent jump from the same period a year ago.


Lorain County Community College unveils program for veteran medics, corpsmen

Lorain County Community College announced it is helping veterans bridge the gap to civilian life with a new accelerated program designed to assist veteran medics and corpsmen and others with military experience find new careers as paramedics or other health care positions.

This program is designed to accelerate the paramedic program by allowing students to receive credit for their military medic and corpsman experience through Prior Learning Assessment.

Meadow Lakes in North Ridgeville getting more homes

North Ridgeville Council approved two more phases in the Meadow Lakes development in its June 19 meeting.

Construction for Meadow Lakes Subdivision 13 and Lifestyles of Meadow Lakes Phase 1 can now begin.

The city's Planning Commission approved the two phases in its June 13 meeting with a 5-0 vote.

North Ridgeville puts medical marijuana on hold again

North Ridgeville's ban on the cultivation, processing and dispensing of medical marijuana has been put on hold for another two weeks after the legislation did not receive the super majority needed at the City Council meeting June 19.

During its June 5 meeting, Council delayed for two weeks voting on the legislation because it had the word "prescribing" in it, and some Council members felt it would be unnecessary to ban physicians from prescribing medical marijuana to patients.

Elyria Medical Center sued by Ohio Department of health

Elyria Medical Center is being sued by the Ohio Department of Health to recoup alleged unpaid fees.

In a complaint filed June 19 in Lorain County Common Pleas Court, the state Department of Health claims Elyria Medical Center, 160 Cleveland St. in Elyria, failed to pay inspection and licensing fees dating back to 2008.

CINCINNATI >> There's no verdict yet in the murder retrial of a white University of Cincinnati police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black motorist.

Hamilton County Judge Leslie Ghiz (giz) is keeping the Ray Tensing case jury sequestered a second night Tuesday after nearly 11 hours total of deliberations that began Monday afternoon.

Lorain City Schools reading scores improve, still under state benchmark

Results from state reading tests show third grade results rose 17 percentage points higher than last year at this time at Lorain City Schools.

So far, 92 students are on a potential retention list, said Erin Gadd, director of communications and community engagement at Lorain City Schools.

Bill Ohle, director of school improvement at Lorain Schools, said the district also made gains closing a gap with state achievement.

South Lorain community garden supplies produce for area residents

A citizen-driven community project at the Moises Velez Memorial Garden, 2900 Pearl Ave. in South Lorain, is growing several types of fruits and vegetables that are free for residents.

In its second year of operation, Hollie McGuire said the initiative started in 2016 with a desire to enrich the space known as the Moses Velez Memorial Garden.

Elyria man found dead two days after car crash in Tuscarawas County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a June 14 car crash on Interstate 77 in Tuscarawas County after an Elyria man was found dead two days after the incident.

Highway Patrol Lt. Mark Glennon said there are more unknowns than knowns about the crash.

Around 8 p.m., a Chrysler Sebring was traveling south on I-77 when the car lost control, went off the right side of the road, overturned several times and landed in a ditch, Glennon said.

Heritage of Sacred Music concert kicks off 2017 Lorain International Festival

The 41st annual Heritage of Sacred Music concert June 20 at Lorain's St. Peter Parish at 3655 Oberlin Ave., kicked off a week's worth of events coinciding with Lorain International Festival.

The evening featured choral performances by the congregations of St. Peter Parish, First Lutheran Church and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin as well as the Lorain Hungarian Folklore Group and the International Festival Princesses.

NOACA awards Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative grants

The agency's Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative provides federal funding assistance to communities and public agencies for the planning of transportation improvements, according to a NOACA news release.

Lorain man arrested following alleged felony assault incident

An alleged felonious assault June 18 resulted in the arrest of a 62-year-old Lorain man, according to a Lorain police report.

Stanley Scott was arrested and charged with second-degree felonious assault following an incident that occurred around 9:40 a.m., the report said.

Upon arrival at the scene, an employee of the Haven Center directed police to the 49-year-old victim, who claimed Scott assaulted him, according to the report.

CINCINNATI >> Jurors will try again Thursday to reach a verdict in the murder retrial of a white University of Cincinnati police officer who shot an unarmed black motorist after a traffic stop over a missing front license plate.

They got the case Monday and had deliberated more than 18 hours before stopping for the day Wednesday afternoon.

Families make a splash at Central Park in Lorain

Families enjoyed Lorain's new splash pad at Central Park, 2800 Oakdale Ave., on June 21 following the grand opening of the water attraction. The city has been fine-tuning the water pressure prior to opening and will add two additional benches at the site in the near future. The 2,500-square-foot splash pad features water nozzles which will spray water when children touch the blue pillar in the corner.

The Community Foundation of Lorain County, at its annual luncheon June 21, reflected on the accomplishments it has made last year.

In 2016, the Community Foundation distributed more than $5.8 million in grants and scholarships to the community. It also created 22 new endowment funds, bringing the organization's total to 619 funds and more than $123 million in assets.
