Agents search Elyria woods for missing woman Tierra Bryant

An arrest in California led to a search June 21 in a wooded area in Elyria for the body of Tierra Bryant, who has been missing for more than two years, but law enforcement officials did not find her remains.

COLUMBUS, Ohio >> Ohio's state budget is headed into compromise talks on Thursday following Senate passage.

The budget cleared the Senate, 24-8, Wednesday evening after several hours of debate and efforts by minority Democrats to turn back limits on Medicaid expansion and a new work requirement for recipients of the government health care benefit.

Elyria police searching for car thieves

Elyria police are searching for suspects involved in the theft of two vehicles June 19.

Around 7:20 a.m., a 2017 Ford Escape and a 2012 Ford F-150 were reported stolen from a home on Hollywood Drive, according to Capt. Chris Costantino.

On June 21, the Escape was spotted in Sheffield Lake when a police pursuit began, Costantino said.


Elyria man pleads guilty to causing crash

A 35-year-old Elyria man pleaded guilty June 20 to causing a crash that hurt six people and himself in July 2016.

Robert P. Campbell entered the plea to an amended indictment on charges of failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, obstructing official business, driving under suspension, two counts of OVI, two counts of attempted aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of attempted vehicular assault, four counts of aggravated vehicular assault and four counts of vehicular assault.

Avon Lake police catch alleged sign thief

A 62-year-old Avon Lake man was arrested June 22 after allegedly stealing signs from tree lawns and placing them in his backyard, according to an Avon Lake police report.

John Hoelzl was charged with one count of receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony, the report said.

For several months, Avon Lake police received numerous calls about signs being removed from tree lawns, according to the report.

Citizens hoping to share ideals for a chief executive officer to run Lorain City Schools may fill out a survey online.

Lorain Academic Distress Commission Chair Tony Richardson said the commission must appoint a CEO by July 25. Community sessions June 19-20 were intended to gather information from focus groups and citizens regarding needs and concerns in the district.

At 10 a.m. June 25, Broadway Avenue will be closed from West Erie Avenue to West 17th Street, and West Erie from Oberlin Avenue to Broadway for the 51st Lorain International Parade, according to a Lorain police news release.

It is expected that the roadway closure will last until 2:30 p.m. for all vehicular traffic, the release said.

LCCC to offer applied bachelor's degree in microelectronic manufacturing

Lorain County Community College announced it will offer applied bachelor's degrees in microelectronic manufacturing.

On June 22, LCCC's District Board of Trustees signed a resolution in support of the design and launch of the applied bachelor's degree program.

The move comes as the Ohio Legislature is expected to pass a budget proposal for fiscal years 2018 and 2019 which includes a provision giving community colleges the opportunity to offer select applied bachelor's degrees in areas of unmet industry need, according to a news release from the college.

An early morning drug raid June 20 executed by the Elyria Police Department Narcotics Unit and the Elyria Police Special Response Team netted two arrests on Middle Avenue, according to a report from Elyria police.

Richard Oliver Jr., 38, was charged with trafficking heroin, trafficking fentanyl, possession of heroin, possession of fentanyl, possession of oxycodone, having weapons under disability and drug paraphernalia.

Mary P. Crehore, retiring director of the Avon Lake Public Library, hugs Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka during a reception honoring her service June 22. Zilka presented Crehore with a proclamation during the event, where he noted Crehore's "lifelong love of literature and learning."

A 26-year-old Lorain woman was arrested June 21 after authorities said she assaulted a Lorain police officer, according to a Lorain police report.

Ruqqahi Bell was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, and single counts of resisting arrest and obstructing official business, the report said.
